The first ever Barnsley based President of Sheffield & District Law Society since the Society began in 1875 hosts one of South Yorkshire’s most Prestigious Events.
Distinguished members of Sheffield & District law fraternity and their guests gathered for their 139th annual dinner ‘Yorkshire Lawyers Banquet’ at Cutlers Hall, Sheffield on Friday 6th February 2015.
The 300 guests were warmly welcomed by the President of Sheffield & District Society, Steven Dawson, of MKB Solicitors LLP, Barnsley, and then by the High Sheriff of South Yorkshire, J C Bramah Esq, former Master Cutler and descendant of the inventor Joseph Bramah.
Founded in 1875, the Society exists to represent and promote the interests of solicitors in the area and to support the work of the profession locally. The Society represents over 400 members.
The President’s chosen charities BIADS (Barnsley Independent Alzheimer’s & Dementia Support) and Roundabout (The Local Youth Housing Charity) were represented at the event.
Top table dignitaries at the prestigious event included, The Lord Lieutenant, South Yorkshire Coroner, Commanding Officer of 64 Signal Squadron, The Right Worshipful Lord Mayors of Sheffield & Barnsley, Heads of the School of Law – University of Sheffield and the Presidents of both Barnsley & Rotherham Chambers of Commerce and the Sheffield Chamber of Commerce along with other Judges and other local dignitaries.
David Wright, Managing Partner at MKB Solicitors LLP and Yorkshire Lawyer of the Year said “At MKB we are extremely proud of the way Steven has grown into the role of President and the way he has conducted himself in his role. His success at the Law Society has raised awareness of some great charities and businesses from the town of Barnsley, a legacy which I’m sure will continue into the future”.
As part of the evening’s events Steven also had the pleasure of awarding Robert Spencer, Trainee Solicitor at DLA Piper Solicitors for the highest score achieved on the Legal Practice Course at Sheffield University.
