James qualified as a solicitor in September 2004, having trained at a UK Top 100 law firm in the North East of England. In 2006, James joined a niche commercial practice in Newcastle upon Tyne, specialising in all aspects of commercial property, before joining another UK Top 100 law firm based in the North East of England.
James joined MKB’s Commercial & Residential Property Department in June 2011 and specialises in commercial property. He also has expertise in relation to general commercial matters.
He has a broad range of experience across all aspects of commercial property, including landlord and tenant work, acquisition and disposal (individual and multiple sites/portfolios), portfolio and estate management, commercial development, secured lending and property and development finance.
He regularly acts for both landlords and tenants in their negotiation of commercial property leases and associated leasehold documentation. In addition, James also advises clients on commercial property sales and acquisitions of retail, office, leisure, industrial and development property. He also has significant experience in advising clients in relation to commercial investment portfolios.
James has also gained experience in advising on the property aspects of commercial and residential development projects, including site acquisition and disposal, conditional contracts and option agreements. He also has experience of overage/clawback arrangements, planning agreements and development finance. Additionally, he has gained experience of telecommunications work relating to commercial property.
James has also acted for various commercial (institutional and private) lenders securing finance against property, including property portfolios, in both commercial and residential sectors and has a solid understanding of banking security in relation to properties. He has given advice to both borrowers and lenders in relation to such matters.
He also has experience in acting for Trustees in Bankruptcy, Administrators and Liquidators in the transfer of freehold and leasehold properties, as well as advising buyers in relation to the acquisition of properties in insolvency situations.
James also carries out property support work, providing assistance to the firm’s commercial/corporate department in relation to the property elements of company acquisitions and disposals.
